2017 Fifth Grade Challenge Features New “App”
Contestants "Win" $14,000 for Grants to MCPS Schools

The 2017 Fifth Grade Challenge where contestants play to raise funds for the MCPS Educational Foundation highlighted a first-time technology – an “app” featuring educational questions from the first five years of competition. The game was developed by Dig-it! Games and the 2017 Argyle Middle School Eighth Grade Class.

The app intended as a study aid was developed with questions from the MCPS Educational Foundation production, “Are You Up to the Fifth Grade Challenge?” presented in April at the AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center in Silver Spring. This app was made possible by a grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

More than 200 people assembled at the theater to watch four community professionals and 27 MCPS fifth graders test their knowledge to raise grant money for the MCPS Educational Foundation. Celebrity Emcee was Catherine Leggett, wife of Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, and Teacher of the Class was Elaine Chang-Baxter, former MCPS teacher and now MCPS Director of Partnerships.

Discovery Communications, was the presenting sponsor of the program, and other sponsors included the Foundation’s 2017 Institutional Partners. The app is available for free in the Google Play and Apple Stores.
