County Council Acknowledges MCPS Educational Foundation’s 20th Anniversary

Council Proclaims Oct 13, 2009 as MCPS Educational Foundation Day and Makes Note of Successful Scholarship Program for County Students

Rockville, MD – The Montgomery County Council issued an official Proclamation designating October 13 as MCPS Educational Foundation Day.  The proclamation was introduced and sponsored by Council Member Nancy Navarro.

The Foundation awarded over 115 scholarships to low income Montgomery County students this year and provided grants to teachers and students for special projects. With the help of Montgomery County state legislators, the Foundation awarded over $275,000 in scholarships for FY 2010 to MCPS graduates as well as students in their second year of college.

Esther Gelman, Organizing Chair of the Foundation, former County Council Chair, and current Chair of the Foundation Scholarship Committee noted the importance of the scholarship program. MCPS Educational Foundation Elects New Officers

Jon Enten, Patricia B. O’Neill, Melvyn Leshinsky, Michael Humenik to Guide Academic-Enriching Organization That Supports MCPS Students and Programs

Rockville, MD – The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Educational Foundation recently elected new officers to help guide the organization. The officers were elected by the Foundation’s Board of Directors and will serve a two-year term. The new officers include: 

  • President – Jon Enten, Frost Miller Group
  • Vice President – Patricia B. O'Neill, Montgomery County Board of Education
  • Treasurer – Melvyn Leshinsky, Aronson & Company
  • Secretary – Michael Humenik, ACS Government Solutions

Donations to Schools Vary Greatly by Districts

Washington, D.C. - Schools and districts around the D.C. area rely on millions of dollars each year from private donors to finance building renovations, field trips and scholarships, but as wealthy areas receive small fortunes, others see much less.

In Maryland, the Montgomery County Public Schools Educational Foundation — the conduit for many of the private donations — had $2.9 million in assets, according to the most recent tax records, compared with about $550,000 in neighboring Prince George’s County’s fund.

"We don’t get enough money, that’s the reality of it," Deasy said, adding he hopes to raise nearly $35 million for his beleaguered district, the bulk of which will be held in an endowment managed by the Greater Capital Regional Foundation ...

Event Raises $85 Thousand for Scholarships for Children of Sniper Victims

Silver Spring, MD – The Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) Educational Foundation held a reception at the Indian Spring Country Club to raise scholarship money for the children of victims of the sniper attacks last October. Sixteen local children lost a parent as the result of the sniper attacks last fall. These youngsters range in age from the elementary school level to college age.
